Course DescriptionThis course delves into the fundamental principles and unique process characteristics of additive manufacturing (AM). It provides a comprehensive overview of AM technologies, encompassing their working mechanisms and potential applications.  Beyond theoretical knowledge, the course incorporates hands-on laboratory sessions, equipping students with practical skills in operating 3D printers. Furthermore, interactive group discussions and presentations foster critical thinking and encourage exploration of current research trends within the dynamic field of AM. This collaborative learning environment empowers students to identify unmet needs and propose novel solutions, potentially contributing to the advancement of the technology.
Course RequirementsSophomore required subjects: Manufacturing Processes
Course Objectives■ Understand the foundational principles and applications of various additive manufacturing technologies.
■ Develop the ability to critically analyze AM processes and their unique characteristics.
■ Gain hands-on experience operating 3D printers.
■ Cultivate an engineering problem-solving approach to identify and propose solutions for current research limitations in AM.
Learning OutcomesAfter taking this course, students will be able to understand and explain the characteristics of different AM processes, be familiar with process features and working principles, and apply the learned manufacturing know-how to real engineering applications.
Required ReadingsThere is no required reading. Course slides will be provided as the main learning contents. Several textbooks and journal papers related to the course topic will be covered in the course slides.
GradingThis course will follow the grading policy as shown below:
■ Midterm exam: 40%
■ Lab participation and report: 15%
■ Final presentation: 40%
■ Peer review: 5%
■ Bonus for class participation 2%
